Hey BB. As ever, I’m sympathetic to your predicament with Dr X and wish you the best of luck on that journey (I’ll also drop you a DM re this).. On a more prosaic note, I am also broke and the thought of of earning a quid or two from Substack had similarly crossed my mind. For now, I don’t know of any other way than to follow the ‘buy me a coffee’ route. - But, when I was thinking more seriously about writing, I came across a very helpful author here called Russel Nohelty. He’s got advice about how (I think) to make some £ from your Substack, but I think you have to subscribe. Equally, it’s worth reading the tips for writers from Substack itself. I’m rubbish at seriously knuckling down to stuff like this, but you may well be better. Have a look round Substack, I’m sure there are tips here to make you Substack go ker-ching!

I'm envisaging BB doing a novel (or lively nonfic book) one day, what do you think? I re read Zack Dillon's I Hear You Watching this week, great novel about the experience of hearing voices; and I loved Clevenger's The Contortionist's Handbook. We need more novels that deal with the real (via lived experience authors) around life crises, the medical and psych systems, different approaches to suffering and its relief. We live among a population of the medicated: stories around that need to come out and be heard. I'm writing a post-grad student in crisis in my novel, but there's so much to say (as a university lecturer/ tutor I've been around a lot of under 30s who have been suffering through extreme states) that I know there's a whole lot more stories to tell. Fiction can be a way of bringing experience to life in digestible ways; I'm hoping to see BB have a go at a short story, or a bit of creative non fiction. I see his wordsmithery coming out here.

My memoir is an ongoing, labour-of-love-and-trauma for which there have been several ends followed by several re-beginnings! At some point, I will have to draw a line under it, publish and move on but I just can’t right now.

It's good to keep working at the craft. My first ever academic article was revised and edited 30 times 😂. By the end I could produce one with just 3 to 4 rounds of revisions. Now I'm a learner again, with fiction. But hoping to finish in six or so edits, not 30 😂
